Artists / Yvonne Frenkel Cohen

 (1914 -2004)

Yvonne Cohen’s paintings reflect her close association with Timana Island, her orchard farm at Templestowe  and her wonderful sense of humour.

Yvonne Frenkel Cohen was born in 1914, the younger sister of Valerie (Albiston) with whom she has maintained a warm personal and artistic connection throughout her life. Their father Morris Cohen was a ‘weekend’ pastelist who had a close association with the Heidelberg painter David Davies, and the sisters frequently accompanied their father on his weekend painting trips.

On two grand overseas tours in 1932 and 1934 the sisters were introduced to the major galleries of Europe and became familiar with the work of the great and emerging painters of the day. After returning to Australia in 1935 the Cohens enrolled at the National Gallery School under W.B.McInnes. This was followed by tuition with Louis

Mc Cubbin, six months at RMIT under Murray Griffin and a brief period with John Rowell.

In 1938 Yvonne Cohen and her sister Valerie went north and settled for a time on  Timana Island, a tropical paradise which lies between Bedarra and Dunk Islands. For the next forty years they divided their time between Melbourne and the tropics where they lived for about six months of the year.

A desire to  investigate modernism led the Cohen sisters to join George Bell’s classes in 1949. They continued classes with Bell  until 1952 and remained exhibitors with the Bell circle at his invitation until his death in 1966.

Paintings of far north Queensland the Australian outback and Cohen’s stunning Aboriginal abstracts reflect her close association with her sources of inspiration. ‘Orchard Farm’ painted at her Templestowe residence was the joint winner of the 1958 Aubrey Gibson Art Prize.

Cohen is represented in selected regional galleries including Warrnambool, Bendigo, Cairns, the Perc Tucker Regional Gallery in Townsville and the Portland Regional Gallery in Victoria.
